The Diocese of Newark

People wish to be settled: only as far as they are unsettled is there any hope for them.

Ralph Walso Emerson

The Diocese of Newark is the 13th largest diocese in the United States, with 117 established congregations. Its size and resources rank it in the first tier of dioceses in the Episcopal church. Its reputation for progressive theology places it in the vanguard of the Anglican Communion and the wider Christian church. The Diocese of Newark was separated from the Diocese of New Jersey and formally established in 1874. Newly-elected the Right Reverend John P. Croneberger, the dioceses' ninth bishop, was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of Newark on November 21, 1998. He was installed as Bishop of Newark on February 26, 2000 at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral, Newark, New Jersey. Bishop Croneberger succeeded the Right Reverend John Shelby Spong, who retired in 2000.
